We analyzed 879,361 online stores worldwide — only 1.4% are ready for AI
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI recommend products to shoppers every day. After scanning 7,446 Finnish stores, we went global: how many online stores in the world are actually readable by AI? So we analyzed nearly nine hundred thousand of them.
How we studied it
From the public HTTP Archive dataset we pulled every live Shopify and WooCommerce store we could identify — 1,293,917 stores across the EU and US. We then ran our AI Readiness test on each: it reads a store the way an AI agent does — locates the actual product page, checks structured data (schema.org), product-data completeness, content quality and AI-crawler access.
1,154,852 stores received a grade. Of those, 879,361 had a machine-readable product page the scanner could analyze — the figures below concern those. That gap is a finding in itself: for nearly one in four stores we couldn't find a single machine-readable product page. To an AI agent, such a store is effectively invisible.
Anyone can run the same free test on their own store, so the results are reproducible.
Results: an average of 58/100 — and only 1.4% earned an A
Across the 879,361 audited stores the average AI Readiness Score was 57.5 / 100, and the grade distribution was stark:
| Grade | Stores | Share |
|---|---|---|
| A | 12,584 | 1.4% |
| B | 185,814 | 21.1% |
| C | 409,441 | 46.6% |
| D | 270,177 | 30.7% |
| F | 1,345 | 0.2% |
Only 22.5% reached an A or B. More than three quarters sit at C or below — readable in theory, but missing the data AI needs to confidently recommend them. And only 35% exposed any schema.org structured data at all.
Shopify vs WooCommerce: a large, consistent gap
Splitting by platform shows the same pattern we saw in Finland, at global scale:
| Platform | Stores | Avg score | A–B grade | Has schema.org |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 435,565 | 61.8 | 36.6% | 46.5% |
| WooCommerce | 443,796 | 53.2 | 8.8% | 24.3% |
Shopify stores are meaningfully more AI-readable out of the box — its themes ship more structured data by default. WooCommerce stores are where the biggest gap, and the biggest opportunity, is: only 8.8% earn an A or B, and just a quarter expose schema.org data. Yet WooCommerce is also where the agentic-commerce white space is largest — Shopify has a native agent pipeline, WooCommerce does not (we built one).
What it means for merchants
The market is not ready. If your store is in the ~78% at grade C or below — or among the one in four with no machine-readable product page — AI assistants can't confidently recommend you, and competitors with better data take the sale. The fix is not exotic: valid schema.org Product data, factual and contextual product content, and AI-crawler access. It's just work almost nobody has done yet.
That's the advantage. The stores that get their data in shape now are readable — and buyable — by AI before their competitors.
