More than half of stores are missing from AI answers for their own products

We measured 40 stores: when a shopper asks AI about their exact products, more than half of the stores aren't in the answer at all. Here's the data and the method.

40
stores measured
52 %
were not cited by AI for their own product queries
34 %
of stores where AI cited someone, the store itself was absent (a rival was cited)

Our own measurement, September 2026. Details below.

How we measured

1

We took 40 diverse stores (Woo, Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce; various categories, international) from real product pages.

2

For each product page we derived its own buyer queries — the questions a shopper would use to look for that kind of product from AI.

3

We ran the queries in ChatGPT (web search on) and collected which pages and domains it cited in its answer.

4

For each we checked: was the store's own domain among those cited for its own product queries.

Results

  • The store's own product page was cited in 19/40 cases.
  • Not cited for its own product queries: 21/40 = 52%.
  • Of the 29 stores where AI cited a source, the store itself was absent in 10/29 = 34% — a rival was cited instead.

Limitations

This is a snapshot, not a final truth. The sample is 40 stores, the run used ChatGPT (web search on) in September 2026, and buyer queries were derived automatically from each page. AI answers vary over time and across engines. We don't generalize the figure to all of ecommerce — we report what we measured.

FAQ about the study

How many stores, and which ones, did you measure?

40 diverse stores across platforms (WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce) and categories, international. The product pages were drawn from our own audit dataset. We don't name individual stores.

Which AI engine did you measure with?

For this run, ChatGPT with web search. AI answers vary across engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI) and over time, so we treat the figure as a snapshot, not a final truth.

What does 'not cited' actually mean?

We derived each product page's own buyer queries and ran them. 'Not cited' means the store's own domain was not among the sources the AI named in its answer for its own product queries.

Can I check my own store?

Yes. Outcite runs the same measurement on one of your product pages, shows who AI cites instead, and gives you the fixed page if you're not in the answer.
